CD Projekt Reconfirm Plans to Have Ciri’s Trilogy in Six-Year Window

CD Projekt, one of the most ambitious developers in the video game industry, has reaffirmed their plans to release a new Ciri-led Witcher trilogy within a six-year window. Revealed at The Game Awards last year, the next entry to the franchise is one of the most anticipated games in development.

The new Witcher title, The Witcher IV, which was featured during Unreal Fest earlier this year looks absolutely jaw-dropping. Genuine masters of their craft, CD Projekt have created some of the most stunning and engaging open worlds in gaming.

Given the scale and quality of their titles, it would be safe to assume there would be long waits between future titles. The Witcher 3 released in 2015 and we’re still no wiser as to when The Witcher 4 will launch. However, in an earnings call, joint-CEO Mike Nowakowski commented the gaps between titles in the new trilogy will be much shorter:

“I do believe that further games should be delivered in a shorter period of time – as we had stated before, our plan still is to launch the whole trilogy within a six-year period, so yes, that would mean we would plan to have a shorter development time between TW4 [The Witcher 4] and TW5, between TW5 and TW6 and so on.”

Citing the shorter gaps between titles, Nowakowski said this is because of their use of Unreal Engine 5 in development for The Witcher 4. For over a year, the majority of the studio have been focused on The Witcher IV, so it may be working on multiple titles at one time. The game is in the “full-scale production phase” as per the earnings call, though Nowakowski refused to comment on any release window.

If this six-year period also includes DLC packs during the time between games – which is highly likely given the success of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077’s huge expansions – then it will be some incredibly busy gaming time for Witcher fans.

Witcher 1 Remake

Finally, in the earnings call Nowakowski did also comment on the remake of the original Witcher game, saying “it’s [being worked on by] a smaller group of people”; suggesting it’s a lower priority for the Polish studio.
