We finally got an in depth look at Ghost of Yotei at PlayStation’s State of Play, with a look at all the new features being introduced.
Ghost of Yotei takes place at the Edge of Japan where you will play as protagonist Atsu. Atsu’s family was killed by the Yotei Six. You will embark on a near impossible journey to hunt them down in the name of vengeance.
On your journey to vengeance, Atsu will ponder on the good times with her family. You can enter a flash back mode that takes you back to a time when you were with your family.
Sucker Punch’s boasts that this game will be their most explorative world yet. Sucker Punch wants players to feel like they are in control of their own experience. Whether you’re a narrative-driven, explorative, or combat-focused player, you’ll find what you’re looking for in Ghost of Yotei.
The new clue system is the key to unlocking the experience that’s right for you. Interrogate an enemy to receive a clue card of your choosing.

Interrogating enemies can yield rewards such as new weapons or unlocking new regions. Another option is receiving a Clue Card. Below are a couple of cards that were showcased in the gameplay.
Clue Cards
- Oni Card: Unlock a new area full of Samuri to fight and new abillities for Atsu to learn.
- The Kitsune: A new area full of Ninjas that will ambush you. This card will also unlock new “ninja-like” tactics.
As you progress through the game and do activities, the bounty on Anru will grow. However, you can become the bounty hunter yourself by visiting the bounty board. Choosing a target will take you on a quest to go fight bosses in the game.

The weapons you can choose to take on your enemies are vast. Atsu’s will come equipped with a katana, spear, kusarigama, odachi, dual swords, bow, and rifle. Each type of weapon is particularly effective to specific enemies. Each weapon has their own set of skills that can be mastered.
Switching between these weapons in combat is seamless. In the State of Play you can see Atsu start to lose a fight before switching from her odachi to her Katana to win the fight.
At your campsite you will be visited by character who will offer special skills and shops. As you meet people and grown your “wolf pack”, you will be able to call them to your campsite to access the shops you need.
One of the things you will encounter on your journey is Altars of Reflection. Found throughout the map, reaching them presents a considerable challenge. You will need to use parkour skills and tools to reach them, or you can purchase maps from vendors. Reaching them will unlock new techniques.

The game has deep customization options. You can customize Atsu to look and play the way you want to play. With a lot more outfits, masks, and weapons. Which you will enjoy even more with the return of photo mode.
Select a dialogue experience with Standard (English) or Samurai Cinema which is in Japanese. Samurai Cinema offers full lip sync and subtitles. If you want to take it a step further and feel like you are in a classic samurai movie, you can also step in to Kurosawa Mode. Kurosawa Mode emulates the classic black and white movies with a film grain, audio filter, and increased winds.

Sucker Punch has also partnered with more film directors to help create new ways for you to experience the game. Takashi Miike, the director of 13 Assassins, gets a Miike Mode. Miike Mode gives you a closer camera for combat with more blood and mud. Another partner is Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of Samurai Champloo. Watanabe mode offers Lo-Fi beats during exploration and combat.
