In news that may be a surprise to some, EA have announced that the servers for Anthem will be shutting down on the 12th of January 2026. This may come as a surprise as a lot of sentiment to the announcement is that a large swathe of gamers thought this had already occured.
Anthem, developed by Bioware, released on February 22nd 2019 is a co-op third-person shooter, RPG. The game released to mixed reviews, and was generally poorly received by fans. Post launch content moved from the “Cataclysm” system (planned as a series of 3 acts, with only one releasing), to seasonal updates with those again being cancelled after this first, as in February 2020 the team announced the game would be rebooted.
A year later, EA announced that after internal review, Anthem would be receiving no more content as the developers moved to work on future Dragon Age and Mass Effect titles.
As part of the shutdown confirmed this week EA posted a FAQ on their website.
Details include that as of the 3rd of July 2025 premium currency can no longer be purchased going forward (although players may use any currency they already have), and that the game will be being removed from EA Play on August 15th 2025.
