Ruffy And The Riverside – Butterfly Guide

Ruffy and the Riverside is a 3D platformer bursting with character and strewn with collectibles. Ruffy’s foxy friend Quintus needs help finding and making note of all the butterflies in Riverside, and that’s what we are going to do! (Don’t worry, he lets them go afterwards, no butterflies were harmed!) So here is our Ruffy and the Riverside – Butterfly Guide to help you find all 30 butterflies, unlocking both the Lepidopteran Brother and Lepidopteran Nerd achievements.

Want to read our thoughts on the game? Here is our Ruffy and the Riverside Review.

Quintus

Your fox friend Quintus can be found on the main street of Riverside Town, between the main town entrance and the Cape Roulette.

He asks you to help him find all the butterflies across Riverside, and will reward you once you have shown him all 30.

You can keep track of this side quest in the pause menu.

Riverside Town

1.

Near the Cloak Roulette is a locked door with a green glow and a gem above it. The bear in front of the door explains that they are security doors, which can be found all over Riverside.

Use the green apples in the cart to Swap the colour of the gem to green, unlocking the door.

Inside is the butterfly.

2.

From the main entrance to Riverside Town, head north and take the left path.

You will come to a wall of stone blocks with one wooden box. Use the Swap to change all the blocks to wooden boxes and bust on through.

Hovering near the volcano is a butterfly.

3.

Starting from the previous butterfly’s location, Swap the volcano’s lava to the river.

Follow the river of lava back towards Riverside Town and head right in front of the entrance to a wall puzzle.

A nearby crow challenges you to a riddle, which opens a portal into the wall puzzle once solved.

Before jumping through the portal, use the lava to Swap the water in the wall puzzle to lava, killing the mean-looking tree inside. Change it back to water afterwards so you can cross safely.

Enter the wall puzzle and reach the end to release the butterfly. Jump back out to collect it.

4.

Get up onto the roofs of Riverside Town and head to the clock tower. There is a ladder on one side of it.

At the top of the ladder, turn around and jump over the gap, or run around the other side. Here is the butterfly.

5.

There is a button on the outside of Riverside Town to the East. Hit it and it opens a gate inside the town.

Hold down the sprint button and head back through the front entrance of Riverside Town, then turn left towards Cape Roulette. The gate is just past it, where the bridge is.

Get there in time, and the butterfly is yours.

6.

Near where you found the button is a red Turbo Tube. Use your Swap to make it purple using the nearby tree.

Your journey through the Turbo Tube will take you to the butterfly high up on a cliff.

7.

Head North away from Riverside Town and take the right path.

There is a door around here. Swap the blue candles on top to red using the others nearby to open the door.

Inside, you’ll find a butterfly, as well as lovely easter eggs to the games that inspired Ruffy and the Riverside!

Central Riverside

8.

In the Northeast of Central Riverside is a forest with some giant tree stumps.

There is a large waterfall with signs pointing up either side of it.

Look nearby to the left to find some vines to use your Swap ability on to then change the waterfall to vines.

Climb the vines to find yourself in a hollow log with other waterfalls. Change one of these to vines and climb up on top of the giant log.

Turn around, round to the end of the log to find the butterfly on the edge.

9.

From the tip of the hollow log, look out over Central Riverside and locate a hollow tree stump.

Glide over to it and fall inside. (Be careful, there is a hole in the very centre, so drop near the edge inside the hollow trunk.)

Inside is the butterfly.

10.

After you have collected the Sacred Letter from the Wondrous Woods as part of the main story, you can access the Etoi Sanctuary in the West of Central Riverside.

Look for a hollow log doorway set into the rocks.

Inside is the butterfly.

11.

In the Southwest corner of Central Riverside is a crumbling castle, which leads to the Realm of the Dead. Jump onto the northern wall and onto the nearby blue roof.

Here is the butterfly.

12.

In the middle of Central Riverside is a floating island with a rope hanging down from it, with a barrel at the bottom.

In the barrel is a fish who will ask you to get rid of the shark in the pond nearby.

Use your Swap to turn the shark to stone and free the fish pond.

Hop in the barrel and ride it up to the floating island to find Jobboo. You help him with the Bully Shark quest. Turn around and you’ll see an arch of coins leading to another floating island.

Glide over to it to find the butterfly.

13.

Go back up to Jobboo’s island and look behind them. Below you is another small floating island.

Drop down to it to find the butterfly.

14.

In the crater with the geyser of lava is a wall puzzle. Solve the riddle to make the portal to enter it.

Before hopping through the portal, use the Swap on the worm creatures in the wall puzzle to make them all short.

You’ll also need to use the Swap to change the directions of the arrows; otherwise, you will hit the spikes.

Get to the end of the wall puzzle to knock an ice orb out of it. This will roll down and freeze the lava into an icy platform.

Ride the ice geyser up and jump to the floating island with the Turbo Tube.

Use your Swap to change the Turbo Tube’s colour to red with the tree’s leaves, then hop in.

You’ll pop out on top of the tower with a telescope on top. This is where you meet the crow Lux, whom you can help as one of the game’s side quests. The butterfly is on the edge of Lux’s tower.

To learn more about Lux’s side quest and unlock the I Am A Scientist Now achievement, check out our Ruffy and the Riverside – Lux Guide.

15.

In the icy area of Central Riverside is a cave that leads to a cliffside area and the entrance to the Bale Farm.

There is a crow standing next to a rock with a puzzle on it.

Solve the puzzle to create a portal.

This portal takes you to a wall puzzle below the cliff.

Use your Swap to change the pile of sand in the wall puzzle into a pool of water, then head back up to the portal.

Go through the wall puzzle to free the butterfly.

Here is the halfway point of our Ruffy and the Riverside Butterfly Guide, and you’re doing great, keep it up!

Eddler’s Lab And Beach

16.

In the Southeast corner of Riverside Central, next to the quicksand area, is a path towards Eddler’s Lab.

At the entrance of the Eddler’s Lab area is a small cliff on the right-hand side.

At the end of it is the butterfly.

17.

Head down to the beach and find the wall puzzle on the right, opposite the crow on the wooden structure. Solve the riddle to create a portal to enter the wall puzzle.

Use your Swap to change the water in the wall puzzle to ice so you can cross safely.

At the end of the wall puzzle is the butterfly.

18.

Head down to the beach and begin crossing over to the island with the mole’s lab. Once you reach the second small islet on your path, look to the right to see another islet. Glide over or turn the water to ice to cross.

You will see 3 pillars made of stone and wooden wheels, with a spire of rock to the right of them.

Use the wooden wheel to swap some of the lower stone ones, and then use the volcano to swap the water to lava. This burns the lower wooden wheels, creating steps up to the natural rock spire.

On top of the spire is the butterfly.

19.

Cross over to Eddler’s Lab and climb up the ladder at the front.

Head under the waterfall and pass the vines to the rock steps.

At the top of them is the butterfly.

Serpent Door Cliff Area

20.

You will need to have opened the Serpent Door in Eastern Central Riverside, as part of the Serpent puzzle side quest, to reach this area.

Head to the back of the area, passed the big blue tree.

The butterfly is on the edge of the cliff.

Realm of the Dead

21.

At the back of the castle is the path to the Realm of the Dead, which you can access once you have your own hay bale as part of the main story.

Head inside and cross over the gorge on the rail using your bale, and climb the ladder.

Continue along the path until you climb a second ladder.

Turn left to find the butterfly.

22.

Once you’ve made it to the graveyard in the Realm of the Dead, continue with the main story to unlock the mausoleum at the top.

Enter the mausoleum and sneak past the patrolling ghosts; don’t get caught or you’ll have to start from the beginning of the mausoleum again.

You’ll reach a room with three coloured doors, frames, and carpets. Change the colour of the doors with the blue frame and carpet to match.

Behind the door is the butterfly.

23.

Once you reach the graveyard in the Realm of the Dead, head up to the mausoleum at the top and look on the left side.

The butterfly is inside the shaking crypt.

Wondrous Woods

24.

On your way to the Tree of Life in the Wondrous Woods, you’ll cross a gorge using a rail that you raise up as part of the main story.

On the other side, hop onto the lift. At the top, with the entrance to the Wondrous Woods in front of you, turn to the right.

Further along the cliff is the butterfly.

Steep Slope

25.

Once you enter Steep Slope, head to the left.

Near the exit door, on a dumpster, is the butterfly.

Northorey

26.

On entering the Northorey region, head to the right to find a water mill.

You want to hop through the wheel of the watermill to the backside of the building.

The butterfly is here.

27.

In the North of Northorey there is a mesa with a stone tower on it.

You want to go down into the trench at its base.

By a pool of water is the butterfly.

28.

In the Northwest part of Northorey is a sandy area. It’s North of the fort where you find one of Methok’s Etoi.

On an arch at the front of this area is the butterfly.

29.

In the Northeast of Northorey is Methok’s Camp (follow the river if you get lost). Climb up the first ladder.

Across the bridge in front of the waterfall is the butterfly.

30.

Continue up the ladder to enter Methok’s Camp. Head to the left, past Methok and his Etoi.

Near a waterfall is the butterfly.

If you have been following this guide, you should now have all 30 butterflies. The last thing to do is return to Quintus in Riverside Town and receive your reward, a chest containing one of the Legendary Gems that Eddler is after.
