Final Fantasy Tactics Is Back

After some speculation we have confirmation that Final Fantasy Tactics is launching into the modern age this September. Initially released in 1997, Final Fantasy Tactics was the first game in this spin off series, introducing many to the fictional world of Ivalice. While Ivalice later became the setting for Vagrant Story and Final Fantasy XII, many older gamers remember this introduction fondly and can’t wait to revisit.

In Final Fantasy Tactics, players are introduced to a country trying to recover from war and place a new ruler on the throne. Of course, things can never be simple and we’ll find ourselves in the middle of The Lion War. We follow the story of Ramza Beoulve as he navigates this conflict as only one can be crowned. Even when Ramza abandons his ties to nobility, the war pulls him in. It won’t be that easy to escape, but perhaps as Ramza you’ll find your way.

Final Fantasy Tactics allowed players to customize characters into a variety of roles. For those who have played games such as Fire Emblem before may be familiar with the job trees. In Tactics, players would use job points to have characters level up along the way. Characters would begin as Squires or Chemists, the base roles for fighters or magic users. With the job point system, once characters had enough points and they could unlock other roles. There were twenty jobs accessible by characters allowing for customization of your game play.

Much of this will return in the upcoming remake. Notably, you can choose how you’d like to play. Final Fantasy Tactics The Ivalice Chronicles will come with two versions of the game. For those who want the nostalgia to flow, they can play the classic version. Relive the graphics and story line exactly as you remember or select the enhanced version. They’ve already announced the enhanced version will feature fully voice dialogue, story adjustments, and a new interface.

Graphics are not the only thing getting an update in the enhanced version.

Final Fantasy Tactics was the first in the series and perhaps with a reintroduction, we’ll see more tactical games in the near future. In fact, there were additional games in the Final Fantasy Tactics series. Previously, these games were only on Game Boy Advance although the characters appeared in a variety of Final Fantasy series. Will this open up the door to see more of these games make it to modern console?

Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles will launch September 30th for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Of course, Final Fantasy Tactics – The Ivalice Chronicles was just one of many announcements at June 4, 2025’s State of Play. Check out our full coverage of everything announced and let us know how you’ll be revisiting Ivalice this September.
