An Interview with Sassy Chap’s Ray Chase

Some may know Ray Chase as a voice actor in a variety of anime, games, and even audio books. He’s voiced characters in Genshin Impact, X-men ’97, and the recent Devil May Cry anime to name a few. He’s back in the video game world, but this time, not just as a voice actor. Ray Chase is also as Lead Designer for upcoming dating simulation Date Everything! When the opportunity arose to ask questions regarding this upcoming romance games, we jumped at the opportunity.

In case you don’t know what Date Everything! is, it’s a sandbox dating simulation game. You can wear a pair of glasses help you date all the household objects you can dream of. It includes 100 dateable objects fully voiced by so many recognizable names such as Steve Blum, Felicia Day, Johnny Young Bosch, and of course, Ray Chase. So without further ado, let’s learn some more about the creation of Date Everything!

Take us to the start of Sassy Chap Games. Who approached who and after so many years in the voice acting community, what inspired this?
Sassy Chap arose out of our passion to create Date Everything! Robbie [Daymond] and I were goofing off in the booth one day and he offhand said ‘what about a game where you can just date everything?’ and I came to him the next day and said ‘I think I’d like to make that. You in?’ From there we formed a little company to get this dream off the ground!

That is one sassy looking chap!

Lets throw a fun one in here. What is the sexiest house hold object in your opinion?
For me it has to be the final character I wrote who has yet to be revealed, but let’s just say she’s the Deluxe Edition herself! Her design is really off the charts, and her pathing can get into some hot and heavy situations!

Take us through designing one or two of the characters. What is the process like in determining what a personified house hold object looks like? We went through a lot of iterations at the beginning for how ‘thingified’ each of these would be. We knew we wanted to blend creative choices with making sure these characters stood out and hit the wide gamut of what is considered attractive. With 100 characters we certainly had a lot of opportunities for that! Once we set on the general style and rules, we then went through a couple rounds of ideas for each character. Our artist Nijuukoo would send around 4 per character and we would choose the best parts of each!

Trash or Class? The choice is yours once you put on your dateviators!

How did you decide on personalities for these objects?
Some characters came very quickly, as their object already told a really interesting story right off the bat. Say, Harper and Dirk, with Harper being clingy and afraid to let go of the dirty clothes. But not every object was that easy. Celia and Florence, the ceiling and floor, took on a few different ideas where we had them as jealous sisters and some other things before I came up with the lightbulb moment of ‘what if Celia was the Mayor!’

There are so many wonderful cast members in Date Everything! What was the audition process like? Was there even a process or was this more of a “hey listen we’re doing this thing and it’d be real cool if you were part of it?”
For many objects we absolutely had someone in mind while creating the character or writing it in their voice. But I would say that was maybe 50% of the time. The rest of the time we had auditions or asked our wonderful casting veteran Meredith Layne for help on how best to go about finding people without breaking the bank. I’m really happy with how stacked and diverse our cast is – we have some heavy hitters in there, but also peppered in are some really wonderful up-and-comers I’m excited for you to hear.

Seeing Matt Mercer as a d20 is extremely fitting due to Critical Role. Are there other roles that felt this appropriate for the VAs? If it’s okay to be revealed of course!
Oh absolutely! We had Cherami on as Chairemi since the beginning (without her knowledge, of course!) and wanted the chair to be an awesome actor who does tons of different voices! For me I created the Scandalabra from the start with myself in mind to voice him as I really wanted to write someone who wanted to destroy the very premise of the game itself – someone who hated that you were dating everything!

We’ve noticed character reveals on your social media, are there any characters/Voice Actors you will be hiding for players to meet throughout their exploration?
Definitely. There’s a lot to the critical path that we are hiding as well as a few really secret characters whose interactions would just reveal too much before release!

Originally, the game was due out earlier this year but due to pesky bugs ended up delayed. How did it feel knowing you had to delay your first game and how did you overcome that?
It was rough having to make that decision but ultimately it is going to be so worth it. Sure the game was in a playable state, but it wouldn’t have reached the lofty heights that I wanted it to be at! Thankfully the folks at Team17 backed me up and put in the extra budget that a delay causes.

Daemon. Demon. Devil. Virus. Something’s wrong. Something doesn’t belong. Daemon doesn’t know what he… it… is. But something’s wrong.???? ?????? ???????????????????????? ???? ?????? ?????????????????? Strong and wrong.?? John Patneaude

In the announcement of the delay, there was mention of dating the bug, is this something we can find in the game?
Absolutely! Though I won’t be able to reveal exactly how you find them…

Will the dateviators help you find the bug?

Will players always be limited to household objects or can the dateviators also work on other objects? Some people really love their cars!
We had to make some hard choices really early on about the limits of this game – and as we are confining the player to their house we decided that a garage was just one room too many. But there’s always DLC…

Talk to us about SPECS. Why are these the stats you went with in the game? Did these feel like the most important relationship stats?
These arose out of dialogue our first round of writing centered around – we had things that people decided were important enough as regular ‘speech checks’ but they didn’t all feel the same. Some were very funny, some required knowledge, some were empathetic, so we centered around the five in the game: Smarts, Poise, Empathy, Charm, and Sass, and hey, it spelled out SPECS so that’s good enough for me!

With so many objects and options, it seems like there are hours of gameplay. Could you or do you already envision DLC for the future to add more objects?
There’s many, MANY hours of gameplay in this sucker. And we’ve always kept in mind a backyard or garage DLC, so here’s hoping!

What comes next for Sassy Chap Games?
Other than huge record-breaking blockbuster successes, one right after the other uninterrupted? Honestly… I can’t think of anything else?

Any last thoughts you’d like to share about the game or anything we might not have asked?
It’s really nice to be able to finally talk about this game and share more tidbits! We’ve been sitting on so many of these stories for such a long time, and I’m really excited to share them!
